WESSEX BASKETBALL CUP FINALS DAY

The Cup Finals took place on Sunday 29 Jun at Fox Gymnasium Aldershot. All four finals were well contested.

KARL TAYLOR PLATE
The First was Woking Blackhawk Hunters v Woodley harriers in a Div 1 v Div 2 clash for the Karl Taylor Plate. In an intense first quarter both teams were looking for a break but the quarter was tight ending at 18-18. The second quarter saw Woking step up the pace and open a lead that Woodley could never close to more then 6 pts.

Final result Woking Blackhawk Hunters 71 - Woodley Harriers 53. MVP was N Sammut of Woking.

RICHARD BELL PLATE
The second game of the day saw Yateley Silverback Ladies take on Winchester City Royals. Yateleys defence held on in the first quarter but soon the stronger Winchester side started to dominate. Undetered Yateley continued to fight right until the very end. Final result
Yateley Silverbacks 14 - Winchester City Royals 49.

Trophies for this competition were presented by Richards Partner Toni.

KARL TAYLOR CUP
South Bucks Comets were back again to the finals having won on the last 3 occasions, they were up against Hungerford Dogs. This game also saw the introduction of 3 man officiating. The game started well with both teams finding their way, but some sharp 3 pt shooting saw Hungerford edge into the lead. Both teams battled hard with some great offensive board being contested, the game remained tight as South Bucks started to pull away only for Hungerford to claw back and in the last qtr they were as close as 6 pts adrift, but the experience of the side who have remained unchanged over the last few years was too just too good.
Final reult South Bucks Comets 72 - Hungerford Dogs 62 - MVP G Harding.

RICHARD BELL CUP
The final game of the day saw a top of the table clash between Aldworth Arrows and Aztec Storm. Both teams traded baskets at each end and neither looked dominant in the early qtrs. In the second half Aldworth managed to edge ahead and in a good final quarter broke away and sealed the cup.
Final Result Aldworth Arrows 42 - Aztec Storm 24 MVP A Manresa, Prizes for this competition were presented by Richards Sister Sarah and his partner Toni.

Overall a great days basketball in a good venue. Now its time for the teams to battle for position in the league to secure a place in the playoffs.

Steve Lallament Award

Dear Wessex members,

Every year we present the Lallament trophy to respect the memory of ex Wessex Referee Steve Lallament who tragically died at the height of his Refereeing career. The award is for the Wessex Referee that you (the members) feel has contributed most to officiating for Wessex Basketball this season, showing a good feel for the game, whilst setting a good example for his/her peers and is deserving of recognition.

IMPORTANT - I have noticed a pattern in recent years that some clubs usually vote for an official that has done the majority of their home games. Whilst this is understandable please try and think outside the box, think also of the officials that have officiated your away games and also those that epitomise the spirit of fairness and good communication as well as always trying to do their best. It maybe a new referee that you feel has worked really hard to improve. Remember, this award means a great deal to Wessex Officials, especially the recipient of the award, so please use your vote. Please take a few minutes to consult your team members and email your nomination to
Nominations will be accepted from all members including Wessex officials and the committee so please respect Steve's memory and give your nomination by the end of May.

WESSEX CUP FINALS 2015/16 REPORT

KARL TAYLOR CUP:  South Bucks beat Woodley Warriors  67 – 48
The first quarter of the game was evenly contested after early pressure from South Bucks.  Despite some energetic play from Woodley, South Bucks led by three points at the end of the quarter mainly through strong contributions under the basket by their taller players.  The second quarter followed a similar pattern although early on Woodley succeeded in taking a small lead before South Bucks regained their composure to extend their advantage to ten points at half time.  The second half followed a similar pattern as South Bucks controlled the game to the final whistle eventually winning by a nineteen point advantage.  The outstanding player of the final was the South Bucks No.10, Kian Langois  who deservedly picked up the MVP award.

RICHARD BELL CUP:  Aztec Storm beat Camberley Goldhawks  60 – 31
A strong Aztec Storm overcame a game Camberley unit  in the Richard Bell Cup Final.  Aztecs built an early lead that they didn’t look like relinquishing in the first quarter.  Whatever formation they had on court, they always had the better of an experienced Camberley side. Aztecs won the first quarter by nine points and stretched this to 22 points by half time.  Aztec continued to dominate the second half with strong contributions from Dorney-Savage, Wellington and Fellows ensuring that Camberley could not come back into the game.  The final score of 60 – 31 was well deserved.  There were a number of players  in line for the MVP award, but it was eventually awarded to Becky Wellington from Aztec Storm.

KARL TAYLOR PLATE:  Aztec Jaguars beat Aztec Lemmings   97 – 37
In an all Aztec affair, the Division 1 side outplayed their opposition winning each quarter easily.  Lemmings fought well throughout but there were too many class players in the Jaguars team, winning each quarter by 13, 13, 14 and 20 points respectively.  The main difference between the teams was the clinical finishing from the Jaguars players and an outstanding individual performance from Jarrad Adams who deservedly was awarded the MVP Award.

RICHARD BELL PLATE:  Woking Blackhawks Ladies beat Aldworth Darts  82 – 34
Woking from Division 1, easily overcame a young Aldworth team through a mix of aggression and experience. The game as a contest was over after the first quarter where Blackhawks established a lead of 21 points, which they extended to 30 by half time.  The third quarter was won by Aldworth by a single point before Woking re-established their superiority in the final quarter to run out victors by 82 – 34.  Full credit must be given to Aldworth for playing to the final whistle, with Kelly North putting in a strong performance throughout the game.  However, the MVP Award was given to Annabelle Hardiman from Woking for her good play throughout, combined with her coaching the Woking team.

CUP FINALS DAY - 10th May 2015

The Finals day at the Garrison on Sunday was well supported and resulted in the following victors.

Karl Taylor Cup
South Bucks Comets beat  Woodley Warriors  68 – 59.
After establishing a 3 point advantage in the first quarter, South Bucks continued to press hard in the second to increase their advantage to 8 points at the midpoint break. Woodley fought strongly in the third quarter to just one point with three minutes of the quarter to go, before South Bucks responded and entered the final quarter with a 7 point advantage. Despite a strong showing by Woodley in the final quarter, South Bucks remained calm and played down the clock to secure victory by 9 points. The MVP was awarded to Glen Harding from South Bucks.

Karl Taylor Plate
Basingstoke Bobcats  beat Aztec Jaguars   66 – 61.
In an evenly fought game throughout, Basingstoke just edged out Aztecs in a game that could have gone either way. First quarter advantage went to Basingstoke by 5 points before Aztecs fought back in the second to reduce the arrears to 4 by half-time. Again it looked as though Basingstoke would take control of the game in the third quarter but Aztecs stuck to their task well against a taller opposition, and went into the final quarter with 8 points to make up. Despite a monumental effort, they were only able to reduce the arrears by three in the final quarter with Basingstoke using the clock well to secure victory by 5 points. With an outstanding display throughout the game, Gavin Frecklington from Basingstoke was deservedly declared the MVP.

Richard Bell Ladies Cup Final
Chiltern Fusion beat Woking Blackhawks 67 -  50.
In a game between the Division 1 and Division 2 Champions, the outstanding Ladies team of the year, Chiltern emerged as comfortable victors. The game was effectively won in the first quarter with Chiltern establishing 15 point advantage which was stretched to 19 points by the break.  This was achieved through fast breaks and sharp shooting which despite all the efforts, Woking were unable to tame. Woking regrouped in the second half and were able to compete evenly with Chiltern who succeeded in retaining their lead to the end. For an outstanding display in defence and offence, the MVP was adjudged to be Chantelle Goncalves from Chiltern.

Richard Bell Plate
Camberley Goldhawks beat Woodley Buddies 71 – 55.
Despite the final scoreline, for three quarters of the game, it was difficult to identify which team would come out on top. Goldhawks edged the first quarter by a single point, and seemed to have established a winning lead at the break, helped immensely by an outstanding three pointer on the half time buzzer. However, Woodley put in a tremendous effort in the third quarter and reduced the lead back to just one point so there was everything to play for in the final period. Camberley came alive in the final quarter and re-established their superiority to eventually run out worthy winners. The MVP was awarded to Jade Blackburn of Camberley.

Thanks should be given to the referees and Table Officials, as well as the Wessex Committee for the success of the day.

WESSEX CUP NEWS

The first round of the Karl Taylor Cup has now been completed with victories being secured by Airgonauts, Yateley Silverbacks, Yateley Silverbacks 2,  Lightwater Vipers, LT Utd and Hungerford Dogs.  Unfortunately, due to playing numbers, Lightwater’s second team had to scratch from the competition resulting in Farnborough Phantoms also progressing to the second round.  All of the unlucky losers in Round one will be in the draw for the Plate which will be made early in the New Year along with the draw for Home teams for the quarter finals.

A reminder to all Home clubs, they must send me a scanned copy of the score sheet to .  Also, there is no texting system available for the Cup games.

Finally, in the Richard Bell Cup, one early result from the first round resulted in a win for Aztec Storm over Camberley Goldhawks.

Regards and good luck in the next round.
